The Cod
The next night at Capitol Theatre NJ was cancelled to concentrate on this show (well, actually, to give them a day get to Nassau Long Island). The previous night seems to get the attention but, as others have pointed out, this is the better show overall. It has a lesser set and a way hotter set. Shouldn't it be called Cod Cape?
First Set. The SBD mixes Jer out for a minute on Mississippi Half-Step, so you might like the AUD instead. Things tighten up though for a nearly 18min, stand-alone Franklin's. Jer just keeps going and going, and though vamping for many of the measures, they are alternated with bursts. It's good, just not the match of the night before. The rest of the set is average '79: Jer gives extra measures for Mexicali but has to feel his way on the 7th outing of Althea. "Hey Weir we haven't done BioDtl in a long time." Passenger is drummer soup. Jer keeps trying but the set just isn't gelling or taking off, though Music Never Stopped winds up enough to leave 'em happy for the break.
Second Set. China Cat sounds like a '90; a wonderful mesh of comic book colors. It makes up for a less put-over Rider. Why does Bobby start to sing "Wish I was a headlight" when it's never been his verse? (Befuddled, Jer misses it too). Still good, but this Samson is just fucking fierce. I don't know of another quite like this. Hang on and let it flow; it's one of those brilliant threatening-to-trainwreck sparkers. Ship of Fools fits nicely in the set but it's the Playin' that again wows. There's an X factor energy that's surpassing the band dynamic - a Phil-influenced journeyscape, almost as good as 11/1. Drums is great for a '79 - Space might have been pretty freaky for the punters. Jer usually slows it way down for Stella, but here he launches with the verse while fragments of Space are still floating around the arena. Solid - maybe the best of '79. Again the rest is average. They never do get on top of Sugar Magnolia. U.S. Blues is rocked-up but muffed-up. Still, one of this fine tour's top 5 shows.
1st Set: C
2nd Set: B+
Overall = 3½ stars
Highlights:
China Cat>Stella - The main sequence of the second set is solid - particularly China, Playing, and this wonderful Samson.

China Cat > Rider
Came to this show because others said the China Cat > Rider was one of the best. I was not disappointed.
P.S. I was disappointed when I saw that Cape Cod '79 was going to be on "30 Trips Around the Sun", and then found out that it was the other night :(
